Standard causes of human misjudgement

Circa today. Oshiwara.

I have lazed a lot today. The day was a chaotic one, sure. But I also gave up on things to be honest. I have a list of unfinished tasks, went to the gym and then came back, ate a dinner and feel like eating a second one now. Will end up ordering kachra, mostly. And those are my three main things down the drain: Work, gym and eating.

It’s Holi and I love the festival. Let’s be honest, I love all festivals. I’m an excited person. Did a tiny little Holika at home. I like being able to do my own version of festivities as an adult. Shall reprot further on this tomorrow.

By the way, I almost considered not writing this post today. Feels like this writing has been adding zero value to it’s readers, and the world at large. But I don’t think I am doing this for the world — I write because I wanted to challenge myself. Into doing something consistently. And showing up. Plus, I must never forget remember what Mridvika told me about value. Here’s the story. So, that.

And Rutu said she’d go workout tomorrow if I wrote today. Champ, this one’s for you 😛

One. Standard causes of human misjudgement.

Here’s a brief from Saurabh on one of our 100 WhatsApp groups:

EACH of you – PLEASE SEE this and BLOG about it, write it on Linkedin and tell me about what you learnt from this – https://vimeo.com/382219966. Whoever wants to hang around me for rest of your lives, send me a link to what you write. Show me you want to be around me.”

SG, here are my notes.

Ps: I absolutely dislike sharing any kind of notes in public. But there’s always a first time.

Why do people misjudge // Charlie Munger:

  1. Psychological denial: Mums with their kids being in a crash. You just don’t want to believe something, particularly when it’s bad for you.
  2. Agency cost
  3. Consistency and commitment tendency: Why my college will stick to it’s inefficient ways.
  4. Pavlovian association: Advertising works on PA.
  5. Reciprocation tendency: Asking for too much and then giving them your original offer. Remember reading Robert Cialdini talk about this in Influence. One of the greatest lessons there.
  6. Social proof: Highly indexing on conclusions of others. Man with hammer — same solution for all problems, won’t work tbh.
  7. Contrast-caused distortion: Different contexts will make you perceive the same situation differently. Cognition manipulates sensation. How real estate people line up their showings, learnt this in Selling Sunset.
  8. Over-influence by authority: How someone with authority/power ka opinion seems to have more influence on others. Their opinions weigh more.
  9. Deprival super-reaction syndrome.
  10. Envy jealousy: They don’t talk enough about this. Should look up. #AKTR
  11. Chemical dependency:
  12. Misgambling compulsion: Must study the psychology of casinos. #AKTR
  13. Liking distortion: Overheard some kid talk about how they got placed because the recruiters were Gujarati and she started the conversation with Kem Cho out of habit.
  14. Stress induced mental changes: Any trauma response.

How I hope to apply this in my life: I recently learnt about The Six Thinking Hats and Lenny had also posted about the The Seven Kinds of Inner Critics. These are all tools to explore an idea and widen my thinking about the world. Same with these reasons of misjudgement. Charlie talks about why people misjudge the world around them, make wrong choices with the utmost confidence and hop for great things to happen. Should help me find blind spots in my beliefs. Maybe I will put all of this in Grok and ask it to analyse my core beliefs and assumptions. Interesting exercise.

Second and last. Micro-thoughts from the day.

  1. Today, I learnt about Yerba Mate. Do not know much this, but I quite enjoy learning about different kinds of alt-drinks, as I like to call them. Must look up.
    1. On the same note, should I just switch to matcha? Instead of coffee? Only thing is: No cafe seems to be doing a good job with it.
  2. Studied the Rick Astley for Specsavers campaign in Marketing Analytics today. Here you go.
  3. Discovered the Spatial Audio feature on my Airpods today. Wow. Magic. All this while, I was only using it like a simple being. I think I unlocked some new superpowers for me.
  4. Three showers a day might become a summer lifestyle. The heat has been bad. Your girl really can not take it.
  5. I found Raahavy Rasaiya’s pushup video last night. This one. And oh boy — don’t know what she’s preparing for, but she is ready. I must add her to my list of people who I think of before I plan on cutting gym.
  6. And oh, Ishita might be in Bombay. May. Excited to see her 🙂

That’s all for the day.
